This year marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of Amnesty International and the 40th birthday of Amnesty’s local group in Manchester. To celebrate, local and internationally renowned writers and speakers read and speak on the theme of refuge and asylum. Among those appearing will be Mende Nazer, human rights activist and author of the international best-selling autobiography Slave which has touched millions of lives, and Caroline Clegg, artistic director of Feelgood Theatre, who adapted Mende’s work for stage. The event will also feature members of Women Asylum Seekers Together, who will read excerpts from Am I Safe Yet?, a collection of stories from women who have sought asylum in Britain. All proceeds from this event will go to Amnesty International. Amnesty will also be running a good-quality used book sale 1 – 4pm.
